HAIR AND SCALP

Dry vs Oily Scalp. Every day we lose dead skin cells, and our scalp is no exception. When more skin cells are lost than normal, they can clump together forming flakes called dandruff. Dandruff forms on the scalp when conditions are either too dry or too oily. For dry conditions, we have found that Tri’s Unific Energy Moisturizer is the ultimate boost for dry scalp. With an infusion of herbs, protein, and peppermint oil, your scalp will be refreshed in 3-5 days leaving the flakes in the past.
Oily scalp is a little more complicated. Excessive production of sebum, our body’s natural oil, can cause a fungus to grow on the scalp. The flakes are often greasier and more yellow in color. They can also affect eyebrows, ears, face, and upper body. Using a shampoo with salicylic acid has proven to be effective and safe in keeping an oily scalp under control. We have found that Menscience Daily Shampoo is just the ticket. It can also be used on the face and body and will not cause your hair or skin excessive drying like products with tar.
DHT, Dihydrotestosterone, is produced naturally. An abundance of DHT can cut off blood supply to the hair follicle, which is critical to growth of new hair. Thinning and or balding process begins when this occurs. Combat DHT topically with specialized products to minimize DHT on your scalp.

SKINCARE

Exfoliation is the removal of dead skin cells on the skin’s outermost surface. The regeneration process causes us to lose skin cells daily. The problem is, those skin cells can build up on the outer layer of the epidermis. At Modern Male, we use only the most advanced methods and products designed for men’s skin. Our treatments are customized for each individual because no two faces are alike. Professional exfoliation is like circuit training for your skin.
Skin Cancer is the most common malignancy in the United States and it is one of the most preventable. 90% of skin cancers are associated with sun exposure and more than 10,000 people in the US die from skin cancer each year. Prevention is the key. Don’t skimp on sunscreen, make sure you are using one that does the job. And remember to re-apply. Rule of thumb, take the SPF of your sunscreen and multiply by two and that is how many minutes it should last. And be sure to replace once a year.

SHAVING

Be careful of those multi-blade razors. Remember with each stroke across your face, you are shaving that particular spot 3 or 4x’s more than with a traditional single blade. 3 strokes times 4 blades = 12 swipes across your skin. OUCH!
Before starting your shave, take a few moments to soften your beard up. A hot steamy shower works or go to the next level by adding a hot towel. Softening the beard will put less stress on your skin when shaving.
After shaving be sure to rinse away all residue from your face with tepid water. Then calm down your skin with a cool rinse. We always recommend a spray or splash of mild astringent at this time. We have found First Defense from Brave Soldier to be extremely effective. First Defense is a cleansing and healing antiseptic spray with aloe, witch hazel and tea tree oil. The perfect combination of ingredients for a post shave remedy. It is also equally important to remember not to put too much pressure on your razor when shaving and avoid shave creams with alcohol in them.
Directional Shaving: Take some time to analyze the direction your facial hair is growing in. More often than not, when I see a client who experiences a lot of irritation and breakouts from shaving I will notice an intense change in directional growth in their beard. When you have hair growing in different directions and you take your razor across your face in one direction you are going to cause irritation. With your first lather, shave in the direction of the hair growth. Re-lather, then you can go against the grain but only once. Don’t keep sweeping the blade across your face. If the hair does not shave off clean you may need to reassess the razor or shaving cream you are using. Give an Ultimate Shave a try and I will run through some simple pointers to help you with your daily shave.
